Every 12 hours, a Mexican journalist is threatened. Decades of impunity in states rife with organized crime have made the country among the most dangerous for news media. And though Mexico’s government has an official system to protect journalists — known as the Mechanism — it doesn’t go far enough.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Illustrated, designed and programmed the story.
  • Tailored the presentation with responsive web design to ensure it works well on a phone or a larger desktop monitor. The comics load significantly faster than videos, which is critical in VOA markets with limited bandwidth.
  • Created simple CSS animations as the reader scrolls.
  • Drew portraits of the 31 journalists murdered from 2012 to 2021.
  • Designed and coded an interactive graphic showing trends and bios of the murdered journalists.
  • Modified a storyboard tool I built to help simplify the translation process.
